Game longevity
Hey guys,
Has either NCSoft or ArenaNet said anything regarding when and if they're going to pull the plug on GW? Given that they don't have a constant income stream I would figure they would have an end-of-life to the game. I bought the game recently and am having quite a bit of fun, I'm just mindful that now that I found a decent MMO, they're gonna pull the rug under my feet, so to speak Peace. |

well considering that NCsoft own 11 other games with a pay-per-month system i recon they just pull funds from them to fund GW so the odds of them pulling the plug on GW are slim

They've stated that GW servers will still run after 2 is released, which probably wont be until 2011. So my guess is that they will close the servers about a month after GW2 if they havent done so already.

I really doubt they will. Just think about it. GW2 comes out and say 1 million new people (as in non current GW players) buy it. They might enjoy it and go back to the original GW and see how it is. So 1 million x $100 (idk prices for all 4 just made up a figure).
The game should last a lot longer |

GW will continue to run after gw2. You have plenty of time to enjoy the game before then. Don't worry. |

They've said that GW1 support will continue after the release of GW2 for as long as people continue to play. It's premature to get worked up about it now, before GW2 has released. They've also stated that players will be able to add to their HoM after GW2 releases, and update content from the HoM in GW2, so shutting down GW1 servers would contradict that. I'm fairly certain that discontinuing support would be announced well in advance. They're not going to flip the switch a month after GW2. GW1 is still generating revenue.

They wont pull the plug, jsut merge all servers with the us one and have automated events once in a while. Soon there will probably be only 1 person working on gw1, the janitor that cleans the server room.
Anyhoo its not like they are doing any kind of work on gw1 atm. |

10% of anet staff are devoted to gw1. (10 out of 100 employees, more or less the actual figure). |

This is slightly off topic but my vision of GW once 2 is released is kinda unique.
Once 2 is released i think thats when the "guild" in guildwars will really materialize. I can imagine true War Lords dominating the PvP scene and massive Guilds roaming the land. The population will undoubtedly be smaller but i believe more powerful in their dedication and scope of control. maybe just a pipe dream but i think it just might be the realization of what GW (true Guild Wars) was meant to be in the first place. Cronk PS oh yea... on topic. itll be around for some time me thinks. |

Thank you all very much for your replies. They make sense. I reckon I was a bit paranoid, but you know how hard it is to find a non-WoW clone MMO these days? I came from a MMORPG (DDO) where content is all instanced just as it is here and it took me about 3 months and several F2P MMOs to finally get find Guild Wars Now that I'm content and can satisfy my MMORPG needs I was just wondering, since GW is pretty "old," if NCSoft/ArenaNet has put a date on it. Reading all the replies above, it seems that's not the case at all which is good news!

After advertising on Steam and offering name changes/stylist options for sale recently I'd have to say they've had a nice stream of money income. Shouldn't have anything to worry about

Guild Wars 2 is like a vision of a water on a desert horizon. Itss a long ways off. GW1 has much longevity left.
